Borrowing in English

A lot of words in English are of Indian origin. One part of them refers to the Indian diaspora and another part refers to the English presence in India. This number of loanwords is due to the spread of the British Empire all over the world. Therefore, words from other countries are found in the language. A competent translation into English without knowledge of such peculiarities is impossible.

Here are the most common words.

Bungalow. It is a low one-storey house. It was first recorded in England in 1869. The word itself comes from the Gujarati «bangalo». Literally, it means «Bengali style house».
Chutney. It is the name given to a cold sauce consisting of fruit, sugar, vinegar and spices. It comes from the word «chatni», which means «to eat with gusto» in Hindi. In the UK, the name refers to pickled foods. In India, it refers not only to pickled food but also to fresh food. However, chutney should not be confused with the equally popular achar. The former is most often sweet and the other, on the contrary, sour.
Bracelet. The famous hand jewellery is known to have been invented in India. In other words, it is a rigid bracelet ornament worn on the wrist or ankle. The accessory is known in Hindi as a choodi.
Jungle. Few people know that the word comes from the Sanskrit ‘jangala’ (translated as ‘rough’). The origin story refers to a marshy or arid area. The exact history is not clear. The word ‘jangal’ is also found in Urdu. In the Iranian highlands and India, the term is used to refer to ungroomed vegetation usually found in abandoned areas.
Guru. This is a Sanskrit word. Its meaning is teacher, mentor. In the original Sanskrit there is another designation for the term — disperser of darkness.
